Fever-Tree Indian: Still the Reliable Classic After 20 Years
When Fever-Tree launched its Indian Tonic Water in 2005, it did something simple but radical: it made quinine the hero. At a time when commercial tonics were saccharin-sweet and aggressively carbonated, the Indian was restrained, mineral, and genuinely bitter in the best possible way.
The recipe has changed little since inception, and that is a statement of confidence. The high-altitude Congolese quinine gives a clean, distinct bitterness without the harsh, tannic edge that lower-quality quinine can produce. The lemon peel and natural spring water round it out into something that feels both complete and neutral enough to work with almost any gin.
It is not the most exciting tonic on the shelf — the Mediterranean, the Elderflower, and the Grapefruit all make stronger first impressions. But the Indian is the tonic you trust. Consistent, versatile, and still among the best at the 8.8 mark.
