Schweppes Premium: Respectable, But the Gap Is Real
Credit where it is due: the Schweppes Premium Mixer Indian Tonic is a meaningfully better product than the brand's standard tonic. The quinine is cleaner, the carbonation is finer, and the 150ml single-serve format encourages proper cold drinking. For a mass-market brand taking its first steps into the premium segment, this is a commendable effort.
The problem is that the competition it now sits alongside has two decades of premium-only focus behind it. Against Fever-Tree Indian or Thomas Henry, the Schweppes Premium reads as underweight. The finish is short, the botanical character is limited to a polite hint of lemon, and the body is thinner than either competitor.
At its price point — usually 30 to 40% cheaper than Fever-Tree — it makes a defensible case for itself. If you are looking for a step up from the standard supermarket tonic without committing to premium pricing, this is a rational choice. The 6.8 is honest: it is good, not great.
